The goal of this provider team in Calgary is to help you live the best life you can every day. One thing that has helped many people is Prolotherapy treatments in Calgary. Prolotherapy is a form of regenerative injection therapy. It triggers the release of growth factors that stimulate the healing of injured tissues locally in the area of injection. The solution itself is essentially simple sugar in water (called dextrose) with a small amount of anaesthetic to aid in the discomfort of the procedure.

We also offer prolotherapy, an alternative therapy option that may help repair tissues in the body through injections. It’s also known as regenerative injection therapy or proliferation therapy and is a natural and non-surgical option for treating chronic pain and musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.

Prolotherapy treatments stimulate the natural healing process in your body, initiating the growth of new tissues at the site of injury. These injections are given over multiple treatment sessions and delivered to ligaments, tendons, or internal joint structures. Prolotherapy injections can reduce pain by addressing the cause of injury and stabilizing the joint.

We’ll work from your health intake information to make treatment recommendations that are right for you. A first appointment will likely take about 40 minutes, which includes your first treatment. The number of treatments will vary depending on your health and vitality, type and severity of condition or injury, age, activity levels, and other factors.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The procedure itself is uncomfortable and varies in pain depending on your tolerance. The anaesthetic helps with discomfort during and immediately after the procedure, but you can expect it to wear off within 2-3 hours. Dr. Scott will instruct you on methods and medications/supplements you CAN and CAN'T use to manage post-procedure pain.

After the treatment you can expect the pain to hit its peak the night and day after the procedure, and pain typically starts to taper off by the 2nd-4th day post-procedure. However, in rare cases, some people experience heightened pain for up to 7 days before it starts to subside. Again this is independent and is affected by many factors including your own vitality.

IS PROLOTHERAPY FOR ME?

Prolotherapy is a great option for people with tendon and ligament tears causing joint instability, recurrent joint injuries, osteoarthritis among other joint injuries. With that said, prolotherapy may be less effective in certain populations. Smoking, heavy alcohol use and diabetes are a few common conditions that can impair the healing process, hindering prolotherapy less effective than an otherwise healthy or vital individual. A consult with Dr. Scott will evaluate if you are a good candidate for prolotherapy.

HOW LONG SHOULD IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?

Many people start noticing increased strength and decreased pain within the first couple of treatments. Although you start to experience decreased pain, optimal healing of damaged tissue takes months. The reason you can experience quick results is because dextrose has an effect on nerves in which it blocks pain signals from transmitting to your brain. Although this is a great result of treatment early on, it is still suggested to continue with 4-6 injection treatments to maximize healing the tissues and prevent further injury. With that said, efficacy and response depends on many factors, including how vital and healthy you are at the beginning of treatment.

How Does It Work?

Prolotherapy works by causing a local inflammation response stimulating the body to regenerate the damaged tissue. Inflammation is cause by a combination of the concentrated dextrose solution itself, as well as the trauma from the needle. The inflammation response triggers the body to begin the healing cascade by activating fibroblasts at the injured tissue, which stimulate the production of collagen.

IS PROLOTHERAPY COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Prolotherapy is a treatment offered as part of a naturopathic visit, which is covered by insurance companies that have naturopathic medicine (or naturopathy) coverage. Check with your insurance provider if you are unsure about naturopathic coverage.
